Three Lions, 2015. Jordan Casteel. “JC: Generally speaking, home tends to be where we are our most vulnerable and intimate selves. The domestic space directly correlates with comfort and, as a result, it feels significant to have each of my subjects surrounded by their own personal belongings. Their environment acts as support for the story of that individual which I am trying to tell, and have the viewer engage with.”-studiointernational.com #111december2017lookingatart

Yeah...I am a proud publisher. One of my favorite things these days is watching New American Paintings alumni thrive in their careers. There are a number of them who will be on view at the 2017 Art Basel Miami fair. Kudos to all off them. 2017

, "Amina" (2017). Oil on canvas. Jordan Casteel is an American artist famed for her grand depictions of black men. As a self-described "observer", Casteel's large-scale paintings, which have been exhibited across the US and the UK, challenge representations of black masculinity by portraying the intimacy, vulnerability and relatability of black male life. The piece above, a departure from her usual subject matter, pays homage to a site of identity, friendship and belonging for black women: the hair salon.

This Art21 profile of Jordan Casteel is excellent - 7 minutes of quality inspiration. Beautiful portraiture that reminds me a bit of Alice Neel.
