"The closest I ever came to having a painter-colleague" is how Howard Hodgkin described his friendship with Patrick Caulfield. 🎨 As a mark of their friendship, Hodgkin was given one of ’s greatest paintings, ‘Sweet Bowl’ (1966). Kept in private hands for decades, the work demonstrates a heightened awareness of and space, its unlikely lushness transforming an ordinary subject into something strangely extravagant. Hodgkin’s distinguished friendships are powerfully represented throughout his personal collection, which also stars works by , and . Some highlights and artifacts from my life at home in Moseley, Birmingham, UK. A beautifully adorable cup from my childhood, with a reassuring face from my grandmother's vast collection of life paraphernalia, ultra shiny Colombian coffee beans about to be ground into fine coffee, a shot of my favourite coffee mug from the Tate shop with 'Pottery' by Patrick Caulfield (from 1969) as the design and a silly selfie of me wearing my favourite Lush facial mask... Patrick Caulfield in the collection. ‘After Lunch’, 1975 is characteristic of Caulfield’s paintings of the mid-1970s, when he incorporated more detailed, realistic elements into his work. His preference for cheap and readily available house paint, applied to a flat surface, recalls the anonymous technique of the sign painter, dispensing with visible brushstrokes and unnecessary. © The Estate of Patrick Caulfield. In 1990, my father was 60 years old. In preparing for a big party to celebrate, I asked three of his closest friends and fellow artists to make a quick portrait of Robyn without looking at any pictures of him, in other words, from their memory. Each work on paper that came back perfectly captured his essence in a loving and knowing way. This one is by Sir Howard Hodgkin, who cheated a little bit... can you see how ? I have it in my bedroom now. . .

If anyone needs more of an excuse to visit Pallant House to see the Bomberg before it finishes tomorrow, they also have a great collection on show. I loved this colourful, punchy room of post-60s British art, which included Hodgkin, Paolozzi and Caulfield, all playing off one another in the space. Patrick Caulfield was born in 1936. An English painter and printmaker, he is best known for his bold canvas, which depicted brightly coloured scenes often incorporating elements of photorealism. This painting, ‘Coloured Still Life’ (1967) was part of a set of six screenprints on a still-life theme commissioned by Editions Alecto. Caulfield produced full-size colour models on card, including this painting, from which the printer Chris Prater at the Kelpra Studio cut stencils for the screens. The resulting prints were thus both handmade in their conception, but also removed from the artist's hand. The process was complementary to the stylistic approach of his paintings, as it enabled flat and even areas of saturated colour demarcated by strong outlines. . Along with Eduardo Paolozzi, Richard Hamilton & Peter Blake, Caulfield radically challenged thinking about art and mass media in the 1950s and 60s. Find out more in our upcoming exhibition, POP! Art in a Changing Britain (24 February – 7 May 2018). . . Patrick Caulfield, Sweet Bowl (1967). It was my A level art teacher who introduced me to Patrick Caulfield. I will always be grateful to Mr Pendleton as seeing Caulfield’s work makes me happy. This is one of his most famous prints and I saw it today in ‘On Form’ a new exhibition at Peterborough Museum & Art Gallery. There was six other Caulfield prints on display from his Jules Laforgue series. Caulfield died in 2005 and has a very interesting gravestone, which he designed, in Highgate Cemetery (Google it). Exhibition is on display until 22 March and it’s free to visit. exhibition
