Hahtag #astronauts: Former NASA astronaut Bruce McCandless II passed away

Former NASA astronaut Bruce McCandless II passed away on Dec. 21, 2017, at the age of 80. Most known for being the 1st human to free-float on a shuttle spacewalk, he also served as the Apollo 11 moonwalkers’ link to mission control. On Feb. 12, 1984, he ventured further away from the confines and safety of his ship than any previous astronaut had ever been, made possible by a nitrogen jet propelled backpack. After a series of test maneuvers inside and above Challenger's payload bay, McCandless went "free-flying" to a distance of 320 feet away from the Orbiter. This stunning view shows McCandless out there amongst the black and blue of Earth and space. Godspeed Captain. Credit: NASA

Hahtag #astronauts: The beautiful space between Earth and the International

The beautiful space between Earth and the International Space Station ( ) was immortalized by NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hei while orbiting 250 miles above the planet we call home. Vande Hei posted this majestic image to social media on Dec. 17 saying, "Hello Little Rock, Memphis, Jackson, New Orleans, Birmingham, Miami, and many places in between! " Currently, there are six people living and working on the space station. They are not only conducting cutting-edge research aboard the orbital laboratory; their images of Earth help monitor conditions on our planet, and also showcase its beauty. Book 3 of 2018: I wanted to love this book - and I did for maybe the first third - but it got cluttered and hard to follow as the space program grew and more wives came into the picture. It’s well-researched and written, providing a rare glimpse into the lives of the women left behind as the United States pushed forward in the space race. And because I’m a total fan girl of John Glenn, I appreciated learning more about his beloved Annie. tagram challenge

is the only man to catch a pass in both the NFL and in space, but getting there wasn’t easy. During a training exercise, he became completely deaf, and it was thought that he would never get closer to space than operating a robot from NASA’s headquarters. Still, he never gave up, and after a chance (or not-so-chance) meeting with a gifted surgeon, he regained his hearing and was able to travel to the in 2008 and 2009. Here, he speaks about the moment on the that changed his perspective on life forever. Search chicagoideas.com for Leland Melvin for the full Talk. 🎶🌎💫

Bright and early this morning, a SpaceX cargo vehicle departed its month-long home on the International Space Station (). Astronauts Joe Acaba and Scott Tingle of NASA released the spacecraft from the station's robotic arm at 4:58 a.m. EST. Dragon, the only space station resupply spacecraft currently able to return to Earth intact, carried nearly 4,100 pounds of cargo and science experiments back to our home planet. Currently, six humans are living and working on the space station, which orbits our planet at 17,500 mph. Located 250 miles above Earth, the crew conducts important science and research that will help send us deeper into the solar system than ever before. Credit: NASA x craft ure
