haul with my girl , I actually do this most days when I run with her. ✨Much of the debris we get washing up are unfortunately extremely hardy commercial fishing debris🎣🐟🦀🦐🐙, and although these ones washed up and are on the beach, the line which comes in a variety of thicknesses and types is often what gets entangled on some of my favourite marine creatures such as , , not to mention the many sharks and rays we see around here, and also all the sea birds in the area. 🐬We also found a number of which have probably been floating around some quite some years. This year I decided to put 100% into starting , and been really planning out and focusing on ways I can educate people starting in my home town here, working on future conservation and research projects, and inspire our town and everyone on social media to be more conscious of the ocean we spend so much time in. 🙏🏼We have one of the most pristine coastlines in the world yet one of the most remote. I want to help protect it because I love it. . 🐬🐚If your in South Aust or come on down to our free screening of next Friday the 21st at 8pm, and please attend our Beach and Sea clean up on the 29th, where we will be diving, snorkelling and walking the front beach to collect what we can, and then make art out of the cool bits we find. 💙💦💙 This will be the launch of our campaign, if you would like to make a donation head to our website ( link in bio ) and check out more details. If you would like to be involved or volunteer we would love to have you help on the day , send us an email info .org 🐚🐚🐚🐚🐚🐚🐚🐚🐚🐚🐚

So... here in the U.K all things plastic have been all over the news. For the past year, I have been trying my absolute best to make my life more plastic free. Slowly but surely I am making all the right swaps. I thought I would start by sharing all my plastic free adventures. I want to share my experiences based on price, quality, environmentally friendliness and appearance. I really hate that we are slowly destroying our planet because we like convenience. That said, as a young person on a tight budget, making living affordable is so important. Today, I’m starting off with the easiest swap I made. BAMBOO TOOTHBRUSHES!! They do the job and I think they look cute in my little recycled jar. They are more expensive working out at between £2.50-£3.00 but providing you sterilise them regularly, they can last a while! I personally don’t see the point in rotating toothbrushes as often as recommended. If they’re intact and kept clean, they can go for ages!! It’s great that the majority of this toothbrush will eventually breakdown and decay, it’s a bit sad that the bristles are still plastic. None the less, it’s still an improvement! Beauty and The Beast. Littering and recent storms have increased the plastic content along The Wild Atlantic Way i.e. the West Coast of Ireland. A combination of high tides and strong winds have resulted in the ocean spitting these unwanted guests out further up the shore.. which is a good thing because they usually won't be dragged back out until the next high tide...the challenge is to get them out before that happens and thankfully we hit it just right! 👏 weed reuserecycle

So since the new year supermarkets in the UK have started announcing that they’re taking steps to reduce their plastic consumption which is amazing news! Something like 90% of all plastic on earth has been created in the last 13 years (don’t quote me on exact figures) but that’s CRAZY! And it lives FOREVER. When you ‘throw away’ something, it doesn’t just disappear, it usually ends up in landfill or our beautiful oceans 😢 2018 is going to be the year where we turn the tides on plastic. I’m going to kick my ass into gear this week to start some new eco related projects which I’m suuuuuuper excited about. We can all make small changes and we can help each other! Hold tight, change is coming fast!

I was recently diving the reefs of St Lucia. St Lucia has three main healthy reefs with a beautiful diversity of massive sponges, reef building corals, fish and everything else you can imagine. I thought to myself, how would it affect the country if these reefs no longer existed... I saw entire communities solely reliant on the fishing, tourism and protection the reefs provided. I quickly realized, if the reefs disappear, so too will they. . . . dive reef

〰️ Sadly, marine debris remains an all too common sight for ocean users. During every manta encounter I find myself collecting numerous bits of plastic and shoving them in my leggings, it’s just become routine now. The most disturbing part is that I know the major threat to filter feeders, such as manta rays, goes unseen by the human eye. : : Microplastics are degraded plastic fibres less than 5mm in size. They often act like sponges, absorbing additional pollutants from the surrounding waters, only to leach them back out again into the tissues of the animals that have ingested them. This sadly leads to the accumulation of toxins in our marine life, from plankton - manta ray 🦐🔜🦈 : : So how can we prevent plastics entering our oceans in the first place? Recycling isn’t necessarily the answer anymore. Plastic production needs to cease, and we as consumers need to decrease our demand for single use plastics in order for this to happen. Microbeads of plastic are often added to cosmetic products around the world, they pass through our wastewater treatment facilities and end up in our oceans. Check out beatthemircobead.org to avoid buying cosmetic products containing plastics! Everyone can do their bit, from using reusable water bottles to avoiding buying foods wrapped in plastic or in plastic containers. Let’s all save a slice of the ocean 🌊✌🏼 : : :
