the amount of Fiery-throated Hummingbirds is overwhelming, to the point where I almost forgot to take some shots of these, elegant and intriguingly beautiful Hummingbirds, the Lesser Violetear. A species found in highland regions as well, at times they were quite the aggressors at the feeders, pushing away smaller species. In Monteverde, where I usually observe them, they’re often the ones getting bullied.

Hahtag #research: One of the best things about San Gerardo

One of the best things about San Gerardo de Dota, rain, you’re almost guaranteed to get some daily, and I love it because it adds a special touch to photos, especially if you can get a little drag, with the correct shutter speed. It really sets the habitat shot for some of these species with specific habitat niches; the Flame-colored Tanager, found at higher elevations feeding in flocks of other tanagers and finches, the bright red means this individual is a male, females are a softer yellow.

We explored a geographic gradient or cline. This means that on one extremity of the cline we saw a lot of snow and experienced bellow freezing temperatures (0F to 32F). On the other extremity, there was barely any snow this winter, temperatures were between 32-45F, and... It was dry! Look at these cracks on the soil. Where I'm from, winter means 3-4 months of rain and humidity. Here, winters are cold and dry. How amazing is Nature?!

I say it often, but I want to make it clear. You can feed your body the best and on the market (these are vital and I can help with that!) but if you are eating foods that inflame your and feed overgrowth then you are working against yourself. If you feed your the best prebiotics and probiotics but neglect your , and habits, you are working against yourself. Did you know and impact loss as much and MORE than ? Look at the , it is true. Our health is integrated. Physical, mental, spiritual, emotional...we have to care for ourselves in ALL areas to see optimal results. There are no magic pills! The more I eat for gut health the more success I see and feel. I’d love to help you in each area. As an MFT, I’m passionate about caring for every part of our health. None of the docs or researchers I speak with seem to have a clue as to what is going on outside of the medical world with advances in gene editing. I was told today that healing genetic illnesses with crispr is unlikely and relegated to some far off distant future. But people are doing it NOW already as a biohacking tool. If science does not keep up- while clinicians agonize over and do focus panels for years about if they should or should not even genetically test folks- the biohackers are already working on fixing things. Unless the medical world gets into the mindset that this is the new medical norm that is coming, they will be left behind in the same way cable companies were when pirate streaming sites came up and they refused to embrace the new technology. The main driver of this cautionary state in med pros seems to be fear- fear of being sued or fear of lack and funding. Fear creates stagnation, not progress. We have the potential to heal the world with this technology. Do we want hackers that want to be real life furries driving these new advances or medical scientists that are driven by the desire to heal? (Not that there can not be room both;)) We have already seen Crispr heal a congenitally blind child at OHSU. We know it works. It is time to start looking into using the same technology for ALL genetic based illness. tic s tic #23andme tic counselling er

Never forget the important thing is to never stop questioning everything and everyone. There are people out there who only want to damage that concept. Some intentionally others through lack of understanding, fear of the unknown can twist words and the point completely. Minds that are closed will always twist what you say to fit their perspective, either to open or further solidify their opinion or argument. Before you judge anything or anyone, do your own research and ask your own questions. Being swayed by others is not always the best of choices, look back at history. Open your mind and your heart, take everything at face value and then look within. People will do what they do, just remember, only do you. Question everything and everyone, no one is right and no one is wrong. Those who never ask, will never know! everything

Saw the movie 12 Strong and realized I have some holes in my understanding of that war.... being an educator of history and an anthropologist at heart I had to get some answers. Oddly, the back note on the book states that the war on terror is the least understood war in all of American history.

The microbes that live in your intestines might seem very removed from the world outside your body—but scientists have found that these microbes are influenced by the outside world more than previously imagined. What are some of the things in the environment outside your body that can change your gut microbiota composition? Part 1/4. Several researchers have tackled the topic of furry pets: they looked at whether the microorganisms they bring into a house on a regular basis affect the gut microbiota of the people living there. And the answer, for dogs, is yes. Those with a dog in the house have a different identifiable set of microbes in their guts than those not living with dogs. . . . . . . . . recommendations diversity

Reading the Unread Shelf #1 - Charlotte's Web, E. B White This book was written in 1952. I finally got around to reading it one cold evening in the January of 2018. For a while, I was in a barn somewhere in America, listening in on the conversations between a rather clever spider, Charlotte, who says 'salutations' instead of hello, and has a very special trick up her sleeve for her best friend, a pig called Wilbur. I read some passages out loud to myself for they carried a sense of timelessness and musicality. I cried when I finished this book, nostalgic for old friends and new. But mostly, I was overwhelmed by the love that the writer put into his characters. To me, he conveyed the beauty and fragility of friendship and life itself, all from the act of a spider, spinning its web. Please, read it. P. S: My Puffin book version had some extra facts at the end and thus I discovered that E. B White also co wrote the Elements of Style, another spectacular book, which I must revisit again. Every writer should read it!

Chrysalis of the painted lady butterfly, Vanessa cardui. I love the shimmering colors (did you know the Latin root “Chrys” means gold?) and how you can see the outlines of the wing colors in the individuals about to eclose. Because they are relatively easy to raise, and their has been sequenced, painted ladies have recently become a great system to investigate genes for color and pattern formation using CRISPR/cas9.

- lately I have been having limiting thoughts about this semester since it’s a heavy and difficult one. Even though I know even having these thoughts limits me to begin with. The week ahead I am going to work on keeping my beliefs about possibilities without limits. Opening me up to unlimited possibilities, instead of imaging limiting and negative future scenarios, allowing myself to be open to positive new experiences I could have never even imagined 💛📖⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ The possibilities are endless 🙌🏽⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ What are your reflections from the past week and hopes for your week ahead?

The killer alga, Caulerpa taxifolia ☠️, is native to tropical waters including the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. It invaded Southern California in 2000 but was fully irradiated in 2006 🎉!! This picture is of Caulerpa sertularioides, an alga of the same genus, but found on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. It is beautiful, but very dangerous! Remember if you decide to have to have any of these species in your aquarium that you know how to dispose of them!! #🇨🇷
