Gary Harris was a walking encyclopedia of soul, r&b and funk. out of all the people i’ve ever known who don’t actually play music themselves, i don’t know if anyone lived their life for that music more than he did. for a time, he was a serious industry playa (as he liked to call himself), an A&R man responsible for the discovery of D’Angelo and others. to me, he was a guy who would sit in my old apartment on Franklin St. and school this (then) 24 year old about Bootsy Collins and the Brothers Johnson. later on, he spent a week living on my couch on west 34th street, when the music he championed was no longer as in vogue and he had come upon leaner times. but there was no question i owed him. mainly for his musical mentorship and the fact that he was the person to tell Q-Tip, one of my biggest heroes (and now closest friends), “Yo, you gotta meet his kid, Mark Ronson. He’s dope.” He moved down South and we spoke less. I remember when Uptown Funk was first released, he sent me this message “Shit is funky. Definitely a new direction for you, but still classic and fresh. Those horns are huge - like Cheryl Lynn's Got To Be Real, and the counter rhythm on the guitar reminds me of a Bootsy spin off joint called Work That Sucker To Death. All 'n all- you're murdering 'em. Can't wait to hear the album.” here was the musical sensei stating after 15 years, “you’ve done good kid”. it breaks me up to read it. i now wish i had told him when he was alive. what that meant to me. and then on grammy night, he sent me “Congrats on the big Grammy win! You make me proud”. he knew that somewhere in that production, his influence and taste was in there. I love you Gary. i picture you somewhere in the sky now smoking a fat cigar and asking Rick James why “Mary Jane” speeds up in tempo around the two-minute mark. Xxx

I play it so much that sometimes I forget Aaliyah really made some of the most beautiful brilliant and ground breaking pop music of modern times (thanks in no small part to and , of course). I feel so lucky to have spent a little time around her, thanks in no small part to her best friend Kidada (on the left) and her wonderful brother Rashad...Her vibe was as magic as her music that lives on forever. happy birthday xxx

Last night, this magnificent queen of pop brought me on stage during her mind-bendingly amazing show We played "Joanne" (the first song we ever wrote together), on a night that just happened to be the anniversary of her Aunt Joanne's "moving on". Walking on stage for 18000 monsters and music fans was surreal...Thank you Gaga for letting me tick off another bucket list moment (snl, bitter end etc...) while riding your shoulders. And thank you to all of you who got into Joanne. Mark x 📸 by
