The Cubs’ new right-handed pitcher Yu Darvish leaves a press conference where he was introduced at Sloan Park during spring training Tuesday Feb. 13, 2018, in Mesa, Ariz. “I can’t wait to get started,” Darvish said via a translator during a press conference at Sloan Park. Darvish, 31, will be guaranteed $126 million over the next six seasons with the chance to earn an additional $24 million in incentives. Darvish will earn $25 million in 2018. Cubs President Theo Epstein said that Darvish was the team’s No. 1 target this offseason, citing his strikeout talents. A source said Darvish’s deal includes an opt-out clause, but there will be plenty of incentive for him to help the Cubs return to the World Series. Darvish, who has pitched in three postseasons (2012, 2016-17), allowed five runs in 1 2/3 innings to the Astros in Game 7 of the 2017 World Series. Armando L. Sanchez/Chicago Tribune

It’s “Celebrate America” night at the Allstate Arena, and in the concourse the fans are lining up for nachos, hustling past the Visa credit card booth to the blue-curtained gates, beyond which tantalizing snatches of over-played pop music and the booming voice of an announcer can be heard. It’s a sold-out show for the Professional Bull Riders, making their annual Chicago-area stop on this, their blowout 25th anniversary tour. For two nights only, a real slice of authentic cowboy life has pitched its tent within spitting distance of our metropolis. ⠀ ⠀ The weekend includes 36 of the world’s top bull riders (from the U.S., Brazil, Mexico, Australia and Canada), a roster of hand-selected all-star bulls, tons of dirt, fireworks, a wide array of boots and cowboy hats, and one clown. ⠀ ⠀ The lights dim, and the announcer starts his silken-voiced spiel and leads the audience in a preparatory prayer, asking God to watch over the riders and, of course, the bulls.
