to installing images from ’s project “Father Figure” as part of festival. This project explores alternate notions of black fatherhood, and offers an intimate view into the daily lives of black men whom I have worked closely with since 2011. They are parents existing under a variety of circumstances – as married and single fathers, social fathers, young and old, middle and lower class. I aim to examine the stereotypes of fatherhood, specifically father absence by focusing on men who are actively involved in their children’s lives. By showing everyday family scenes, the photographs call into question such stereotypes while exploring broader connections between fatherhood and blackness. The caption of the top left image: , NY, . This is Fatima Tabji's school uniform. She is one of the nearly 300 girls that were kidnapped by Boko Haram on April 14, 2014 from a school in , a remote village in Northern Nigeria. Boko Haram’s name translates roughly to “Western Education is Sinful” and they believe that girls should not be in school and that boys should only study the Koran. Other schools in the area were shut down due to Boko Haram attacks, but the girls that were not kidnapped were able to return to write their final exams. The mass abduction captured the world’s attention, yet despite the outrage, little was done to locate the girls. The Nigerian government’s limited ability to respond to the threats of Boko Haram was made clear. Photo: for
