Checking in from base camp. Somehow I have a connection and wanted to say Feliz Navidad a la familia before I go to camp one and stay above 17,000 feet for a bit. The expedition is going well. I am cold and can hardly breathe at altitude. I had four days of diarrhea from bad water and am already wanting to throw rehydrated meals off a cliff. I haven’t washed my hair since December 11, and I am preparing for our next big push to camp one tomorrow. I certainly can’t say I’ve had a Christmas of this caliber but I am so happy to be here in the incredible mountains of Argentina. I wouldn’t change a thing. Except maybe bring some Takis and more chocolate bars next time. I’ll be sharing much more later but they call me tortuga around here, Spanish for turtle, because I am slow but steady and hoping to summit by the new year. Enjoy your holidays my friends, and eat all the yums and get all the hugs.

kylie.fly: Rest before the storm. We arrived in Argentina

Rest before the storm. We arrived in Argentina a few days ago and have had some down days in Mendoza to relax, prepare and have a little fun before we begin the climb. Yesterday we cooled off from Mendoza’s 100+ sweltering heat at the foot of the Andes in refreshing water with new friends. After gathering necessary permits and last minute supplies, the time to finally begin our Aconcagua ascent is hours away. We will push personal limits to see what we are capable of on this already beloved mountain. I haven’t even met her yet, but I’ve got a feeling she has a lot to say to me and much to teach.

Me for the next month. See ya later, goof balls! Headed to the great beyond to do some stuffs and carry a lot of things and contemplate never removing a single piece of clothing the entire time.

“Home is where you pitch it. And I hope you like it cuz you’re about to live in a tent for over a month. ‘Sept it gonna be freezing on a glacier and yous gonna pee in a funnel next to boys in arctic temps and eat rehydrated meals for like ever.” —notes to self from self

kylie.fly: My love affair with skiing continues. As I

My love affair with skiing continues. As I grow older I grow fonder of things I was already fond of. Skiing, for example, runs in the Fly bloodlines. Whether you’re my pops who can carve the perfect S or my oldest bro who hop turns with precision like the perfect bunny, no matter the conditions, it’s first and foremost about having fun. In fact, everything should be. Because if we all had a little more good old fashioned fun, the kind that fills your lungs with fresh air, then I think there’d be less cases of the grumps and the sads and more of the happys and the yays.

Here’s to mountain selfies. Here’s to climbing in the snow. Here’s to friends! Here’s to 16 layers of jackets and 12% battery life. Here’s to the new iPhone X for putting SLRs out of business. Here’s to the numby barfies and quinoa wrapped in tortillas. Here’s to bouldering at midnight and debating whether or not cow tipping is real. Here’s to Idaho things with Idaho boys, and a campfire smelling of sage and weekend adventuring with friends. Here’s to carrying junior mints in your pocket and pizza up your sleeve. Here’s to being alive and doing exactly what makes you feel it even more: type II fun-having. Here’s to that! Oh. And smiling.

Hi, Colorado. Wanna hang out? I brought my dancing shoes. They look a whole lot like regular shoes.

kylie.fly: If I could channel this sound, bottle it

If I could channel this sound, bottle it up and keep it close I would. I adore many things, big and small, and this is one of them. The ring-a-dings of a tiny summit bell and flapping of tattered flags whipping in the wind... have extreme alpine charm. It’s all peaceful and quiet and incredible until I romp up to summit, panting and probably starving to death to just stare at it, drool a little and imagine what it’d be like to order Dominos at altitude.

kylie.fly: Today was one of those days. Maybe you

Today was one of those days. Maybe you have them too. The kind of day you have to try a little harder to hold yourself together. I found myself out of sorts, to put it casually, and took my feet to the trails. I was hoping it’d take my mind with me, but that’s not so easy to do. During my run, a song came on. It was exactly what I needed to hear. New to my ears. I felt uplifted and had a burst of energy that actually made my pace pick up. I smiled at the trail ahead, and when I looked at my Spotify the song was called “Beautiful Life.” Felt like it was for me. Life is so beautiful! I spent a few hours training and then came home to meditate and take a hot bath, per sister orders. I’m so grateful to Meg for helping me to refocus my energies. I’m grateful to the good people in my life who buoy me up. I’m grateful to my past for teaching me hard lessons. I’m grateful to good food, to a healthy body, to big dreams and hard things. I’m grateful to be here: alive, breathing and present.

kylie.fly: Scenes like these are not only my playground,

Scenes like these are not only my playground, but also my office. The gear I bring along is inconvenient. It’s annoying. It’s heavy, gets in the way, adds weight and sometimes I really just wanna throw my camera off a cliff. And then I remember it’s my career in the form of a camera, and I love it so much that I’d cry a whole lot without it. So I lock it back into its safe place and giggle instead.

When I was a kid I left my favorite wind breaker jacket, the teal one with the lime colored zipper, too close to the space heater and it melted a weird melty thing on it. I never could use my left pocket again.
